Advancing Awareness, Research, and Collaboration Against AMR
The Global Antibiotic Resistance Foundation continues to strengthen its international
collaborations and outreach efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Over the past
months, several important developments have taken place across Europe and Africa, alongside
ongoing awareness and educational initiatives.
Strengthening European Scientific Collaboration
In December 2025, representatives from TGARF travelled to Greece to hold a productive
meeting with experts from the European College of Veterinary Public Health and the
Laboratory of Hygiene of Food of Animal Origin at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
The discussions focused on potential collaboration in addressing antimicrobial resistance
challenges from a veterinary public health perspective. A joint proposal is currently under
development to explore future research and awareness activities on AMR.
Expanding Educational and Patient-Centered Work in Africa
TGARF is also continuing to expand its work in Africa through partnerships with local
organisations. One key initiative under discussion is a patient story project highlighting the
experiences of individuals affected by infectious diseases, including cancer patients and
tuberculosis patients, whose treatment outcomes may be impacted by antimicrobial resistance.
Through this initiative, TGARF aims to increase visibility of the human impact of AMR while
strengthening global awareness efforts.
In addition, TGARF and its local partners continue to provide free educational AMR content for
African students, supporting capacity building and knowledge sharing among the next
generation of healthcare professionals.
Participation in an International AMR Research Consortium
TGARF has also been invited to participate in a prestigious international consortium focused on
advancing research and preparedness against antimicrobial resistance.
The consortium will address several key themes, including:
- AMR surveillance systems
- Understanding resistance mechanisms
- Development of countermeasures
- Data science applications in AMR research
- Pandemic preparedness
- Outreach and awareness initiatives
The necessary documentation has been submitted, and the proposal is currently under review.
Exploring Collaboration on Urinary Tract Infection Awareness
TGARF is also exploring a potential partnership with an organisation focused on urinary tract
infections (UTIs), which represent a major driver of antibiotic use worldwide.
UTIs are among the most common bacterial infections and contribute significantly to the
development of antimicrobial resistance. Through TGARF’s patient platform, individuals
experiencing these conditions may be able to share their stories, giving patients a voice while
highlighting the broader challenges of antibiotic stewardship.
Planning a Global AMR Web Event
Discussions are underway with partners in Africa to organise a future international AMR web
event bringing together experts and collaborators from Africa, Europe, and India.
The event aims to foster dialogue, share research insights, and strengthen international
cooperation in tackling antimicrobial resistance.
Continuing Global Awareness and Stewardship Efforts
The foundation’s ongoing AMR awareness and antibiotic stewardship initiatives continue to gain
momentum. Over the past months, TGARF has shared a range of educational materials, blogs,
and awareness content through its digital platforms.
Readers are encouraged to explore the latest updates and publications on TGARF’s website and
social media channels.
Together, through collaboration, education, and patient engagement, we can strengthen the
global response to antimicrobial resistance.
